Why is employee recognition important? There are many benefits to employee recognition when it's done intentionally.

+ I ask each of my employees "How do you like to be recognized?"

There are many ways to ask this question, but I feel it's the most straight forward way.

+ To honor the preferences of my employees, I give them examples of various recognition types. The free Recognition Worksheet I provided at the top of the description has so really great ideas. Of course, this isn't an exhaustive list.

I find that when I begin to look for behaviors that I can recognize, I find more gratitude in my work and working with those team members.

When leaders spend time recognizing our employees at work, they feel appreciated and see that their work matters. They feel engaged and are less likely to turnover.

Here's a great white paper prepared by the Greater Good Science Center at UC Berkley that talks all about gratitude and it’s benefits: https://ggsc.berkeley.edu/images/uploads/GGSC-JTF_White_Paper-Gratitude-FINAL.pdf

Tailor your recognition and be specific -

Once you know how your employee appreciates being recognized, be sure to tailor your recognition using their preferences.

Recognize your employee as close to the achievement or behavior you observed as possible. Knowing that their leader notices, acknowledges, and appreciates their recent work feels good and reinforces the employee to perform that positive behavior again.

Make Time for Recognition -

Schedule time on your calendar each day or once a week, whatever cadence works for you, for employee recognition.
